This is a one page handout with vocabulary and page numbers and questions that cover literary elements and figurative language found in chapter one of Michaela DePrince's book, Taking Flight.
If there is more interest, I am willing to create an entire unit for the book.
This book is a great inter-disciplinary selection for dance instructors to support language arts and social studies as students learn about another culture and what it took to overcome the many challenges of war-torn Sierra Leone.
Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.
Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary).
Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
