I use the Tale of Despereaux as a mentor text to teach students how to use context clues. Before my read alouds, I have students state that when they come to an unknown word… they look for words that are the same as, opposites of, or describe. There are many examples in the book and the author talks directly to the reader and even asks them to look up a word in the dictionary.
I use this worksheet as an assessment. There are 10 context clues. The sentences are almost exactly from the text. Students read the sentence and write the meaning of the unknown word on the line.
