Supporting Inuit Literature in the Classroom

This complete reading response unit is designed to support the children's book, Tales from the Tundra, retold by Ibi Kaslik and illustrated by Anthony Brennan.

Tales from the Tundra, is a collection of five traditional tales that have been told by many generations of elders and is perfectly geared for grades 2-4 or any classes focused on the Inuit or traditional tales.

This unit is developed to support a single read aloud copy and can be reproduced as individual student response booklets. There is zero prep needed (other than photocopying) and has at least two weeks worth of activities.

The student response booklets use the reading comprehension strategies: Problem and Solution, Connection, Visualization, Summarizing, Retell as a Comic, Compare and Contrast, and Creating Similar Stories

Also included is an answer key and assessment rubric.

I would suggest pairing this book with, When I was Eight and Not My Girl, written by written by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margret Pokiak-Fenton and illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard. The tales would be similar to ones that Olemaun, the main character, would have heard as a child before going off to residential school; giving more context to the story.

Other Unit Suggestions:

When I was Eight and Not My Girl BUNDLE

When we Were Alone

Investigating the Injustice Through Children's Literature

Coyote Tales

To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations, an online bookstore supplying indigenous books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
