This lesson is based on a reading strategy; talking to the text. This is a reading comprehension literacy tool that can be implemented in ANY class. I introduced this in an eighth-grade science classroom. Students were at first not receptive to performing reading strategies in science however once they practiced this method and became familiar with the strategy they were more receptive to it. To boost student engagement, there is a news video of the article that you can implement in the lesson. I also used real-world applications while talking to the text.
This lesson includes an introductory bell ringer using a high-level passage, notes on talking to the text, an entertaining passage at a 1200 lexile scale, $2.00 summary of the teacher model passage, and a "Last Five" closure with a compare and contrast chart to end the lesson.
I've also included a teacher model and student examples.
