Talking to the Text is an annotation strategy that is student centered. It drives students to identify important information to them, key information to the text, and unknown information, and then asks that they comment or use that information to answer questions. I find that using this method as opposed to other annotating strategies pushes students to think for themselves and is key in starting conversations. I use this strategy with fiction and nonfiction text as well as poetry. You can use this in conjunction with another strategy but it stands well on it's own too! Enjoy!
