Description

Chatting swine are ubiquitous in Hollywood and Literature, from Charlotte’s Web to Babe. Is it possible that conversing with pigs could be more realistic than we have imagined? You and your students can join scientists as they explore the true intelligence of critters of the porcine persuasion. Examine the history of their domestication and learn what makes them uniquely trainable and able to communicate with humans.

Suggested Teaching Methods:

1. Pair students to watch and answer questions together.

2. Watch the video as a class, then assign questions as a follow-up activity.

3. Assign each student a question(s) to answer and share.

4. Use as a lesson plan for a substitute teacher.

5. Utilize as an extra credit or homework activity for a related topic lesson.

Student Outcomes:

1. Students will observe a set of experiments comparing the trainability of dogs and pigs.

2. Students will determine the relationship between domestication and trainability.

3. Students will research and examine the many applications that pigs play in the world of humankind.

This lesson includes a cover page, link to a National Geographic YouTube video (2:32 in length), student response questions, answer key, and extension activity.
