This lesson directs students to read a selection for the purpose of finding out what Johnny Appleseed did and what he was like. The selection is a little more than 2 pages of informational text. Then there are 3 and a half pages of 16 multiple choice questions about the Johnny Appleseed tale. In each question, students choose from four choices. The reading comprehension skills tested are: summarizing, main ideas, author's purpose, details, character traits, cause-effect and making inferences. Vocabulary words tested are: folklore, tall tales, pioneers, frontier, exaggerations, orchards, apple cider, millers, and cider presses. I underlined the vocabulary words in the selection so students can easily refer to them. A black-and-white drawing of Johnny Appleseed is included as well as several apple outlines. This lesson will be a great resource for your Tall Tale unit, but could also be used as a quiz on Johnny Appleseed. You could also put it in a literacy center, use it in a literature class, or use it to teach reading comprehension and vocabulary. Being a word document you can readily modify it and print copies off.
