Includes 6 tall tales: Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, Captain Stormalong, and Casey Jones, a page to separate the realistic and exaggerated details, a page to compare the tall tales, and a page for notes. There are links to youtube videos for each story and one for the notes.
For the notes: watch the video, have students infer definitions and answer the other questions at the end of the page. Use dictionaries to confirm the definitions after watching.
Choose one Tall Tale to read/watch as a class. Complete that section of the comparative page and list the realistic/exaggerated details together. Then break the students into groups and assign each group one of the remaining stories. After reading and completing the comparison, students create a comic book to re-tell their story. I use this in high school ESL, but it could be used in any junior high or high school class studying tall tales.
