This six week Tall Tale unit is chock-full of valuable resources to support your ELA classroom! It supports many CCSS for reading, writing, and speaking for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. (A list of CCSS supported is included in the preview.) Also included are assessment rubrics to keep track of CCSS and other learning goals.

In a workshop style setting, students read a variety of tall tales collected by the teacher and choose tasks from a choice menu that includes activities based on learning styles, multiple intelligences, and depth of knowledge. Art is integrated into the choice menu by giving students options to write scripts, poetry, songs, make soundscapes, write descriptive paragraphs, draw and more!

In Part 2, Writing Tall Tales, Students will use what they have learned about tall tales through their reading to create an original tall tale of their own. Through modeling, think a-louds, peer support, and targeted lessons, students will:
• Plan characters, settings, problems, and resolutions.
• Create a plot sequence.
• Learn about writing descriptively.
• Use vivid verbs
• Review quotation marks.
• Learn and use editing symbols.
When the stories are written, Students will publish a picture book of their story.

In Part 3, Telling Tall Tales, students will take their original tall tales and turn them into story telling performances. During this section of the unit, students learn how to create a storyboard to help them remember a story. They also learn how to use their voice, bodies, and movement to enhance their performance and engage their audience. As a culminating activity, students put on a performance for classmates, other students, and possibly parents.

PLEASE NOTE… this unit does not include a collection of tall tales. You will need to collect a variety of tall tale stories for your students to interact with. Scour your classroom library, school library, public library, and the Internet. This unit DOES include everything else you will need, including rubrics for reading workshop, narrative writing, and storytelling.
