This is a week-long unit plan created for upper elementary/middle schoolers that combines reading tall tales and some close-reading group activities. The five-day lesson plan includes daily instructions for an hour long (approx.) class period. You can use whatever tall tales you have in your classroom or textbooks, or you can simply search tall tales online to find a variety of free tall tales to print out. Some activities may take two days to teach and complete the group activities, depending on student levels. Student note packets include two double-sided pages with tall tales notes, close reading vocabulary, and paraphrasing/summarizing activities. The SUMMARIZING/PARAPHRASING CLOSE READ CAN BE REUSED FOR ANY TEXT! :) PLEASE NOTE: Also for sale in my TPT store is the corresponding PowerPoint designed for the teacher to lead the class in taking notes/direct instruction for all of the activities (there is also a bonus slide for writing a tall tale). Some extension activities require butcher paper or 11 X 17 paper. You can be creative with the lesson and modify as needed. Great for a high-level elementary RTI group, a middle-school language arts unit, or lower level high school/special ed. class. I hope you enjoy watching your students enjoy learning about the features of tall tales and the feats of their amazing characters!
