Target Tags/Brag Tags: Genre Genius Reading Incentive Program

Want to motivate your students to read a wide variety of genres beyond their current favorites? Try Target Tags! Kids are natural collectors and they will love earning these fun and colorful Reading Target Tags as they work to become a “Genre Genius”.
This program will have your students branching out beyond their comfort zones, and hopefully discovering new favorite genres!
As students read the required number of books for each genre, they earn that genre’s Target Tag. I give you suggested amounts of books for each genre, but I include an editable form so you can customize for your students. When a student has read the required amounts of all genres, he/she earns the final tag, and becomes a “Genre Genius”. (I then allow them to sit in my comfy wheelie office chair for a day.) After a student has become a Genre Genius, I allow them to set their own goals for the rest of the year, choosing only the genres they want to read.
In addition to the genre Target Tags, there are also tags to award for every 5 books read, up to 100 books, as every year I have a few students who read way more than the expected amount. Each page has 25 tags, so you usually only need one page of each tag for your whole class.
In all, there are 37 different tags, plus some of the book number tags come in separate girl/boy options. Genre Target Tags are for the following genres:
Mythology (I know it’s included in traditional literature, but because of the mythology standards in the Common Core for 4th Grade, I included a separate tag for it.)
“I am a Genre Genius” Tag
**Just Added 10-10-16: Adventure/Survival**
Target Tags for # of Books read- “Book 1 is done!” 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100.
You will also receive genre tally sheets, including an editable one in case you want to change the required genres, reading logs for recording # of books read up to 100 books, and an end-of-year reflection sheet. The reading log also has an editable page so that you can customize, (as long as you have PowerPoint.)

I use Target Tags for a variety of academic and social targets. My students are very motivated by them, and they are a low-cost and easy reward. Just print, cut, and hole punch! Laminating is nice, but not necessary if that is an issue for you.
