Targeted Skill Practice and Intervention: This unit is designed to help students learn about figurative language, word connotation, denotation, and how word choice can impact tone.

This unit focuses solely on the RI 4 standard and helps students learn about the different types of figurative language and how to identify them in writing. It also asks students to use context clues in order to decipher was words and phrases mean in a text. Using real life speeches, students identify word choice and phrases used by men such as Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr. in order to see how and why word choice is so important in conveying a message with an intended tone. There are various activities and learning opportunities in the packet to help students practice and better understand this specific Common Core standard.
