- Learning How to Identify and Make Strong Arguments/Claims with Support and Reasoning
This grade 5, 6, and 7 ELA unit is designed to teach students how to analyze a text or piece of media and determine an argument and claim that can be made from the text piece. Students are then required to support the claim with solid reasoning and evidence form the text or media piece. Students examine court cases, commercials, ads, and articles in this unit that are relevant to their personal lives and therefore easy for student engagement. Topics include: Student right to expression, technology use in the US, historical court cases, modern day ads, commercials, and more. All of which are examined for the purpose of argument and claim.
This unit is wonderful for an additional way to track data on the mastery of a specific standard. The unit, questions, I CAN statements, and activities are based off of research based practices and have been developed by an experienced and practicing ELA teacher who understands what you need. Lessons are intended to reach a wide variety of learners.
This unit could be used to teach an entire class, for Morning Work, intervention purposes, etc. It is very flexible and should fit the needs of your class no matter how you decide to implement the unit. lessons, and resources.
