In this "pick-a-path" interactive fantasy, Tas and Josh have to navigate their way through a mysterious sideshow that has appeared in their town. Each decision determines the path, sometimes sending them back like in snakes and ladders, till they reach a happy conclusion.
"Tas and the Caves of Doom" is the last title in the Power Button series (the Tas books) for Grades 3-5 reluctant and slow-to-start readers, especially boys. There are 12 titles in the set, which follows on from the Super Sandwich series (the Mata books). Tas and Josh, who were the background characters in the Mata books become the main characters in this series, making the transition easy for students who may be reluctant to try something new in their reading.
The series uses high-interest adventurous story lines, where Tas and Josh get into and out of trouble, but usually become heroes, save the day and get adult approval. The vocal is easy, the sentences and text-blocks very short, and the photo-illustrations mirror the text. There are speech bubbles that allow students to attempt two or three words at a time, a map showing where the adventures take place, and the typography and line breaks have been chosen to make reading easy.
There is a teacher's book, "Good idea!" with strategies for working with reluctant reader boys, and over a hundred mostly-hands-on activities that provide shared, guided, and independent reading activities for each book.
