These task cards provide students the opportunity to analyze data in real-world contexts and identify a measure of central tendency that would be a better descriptor (or most misleading) for that data set.

What is included?
* 8 task cards in black and white & in color – reproduce or laminate!
* Answer document with space for explanation – pick up as an assessment!
* Answer key with sample written explanations – easy checking!
All eight task cards present data in a real-world context. Four task cards require students to choose the most misleading measure of central tendency; the other four ask for the best measure (best represents the data).

When should these task cards be used?
Students should know how to calculate mean, median, and mode before trying these task cards. They should also understand that “measure of central tendency” (mean, median, or mode) refers to a single value that represents an entire data set.

How will these task cards enhance your lesson?
The content of these task cards veers away from basic problems involving a simple data set. They place the idea of best or most misleading measures of central tendency in the context of a real-world situation. Task cards can also be more fun than a worksheet!

This activity is aligned with common core standards 6.SP.A.2, 6.SP.A.3, and 6.SP.B.5.C.
