This printable can be used in various ways. It is most effective if you print it out, cut out the squares and laminate/velcro them onto a board. This provides variety of choices for students/clients who are having a hard time staying on task, or initiating tasks. This tool is a great way to assist children and youth in having more independence when it comes down to tasks. It is colour coded to show that it is divided into 'Tasks' with its' various options or steps, 'What I need' with various choices of what a student may need during the task and encourages their positive communication using a brave voice, and 'Positive Self-Talk' to guide them through tasks that may be a bit challenging or discouraging.
*Teachers/Parents can take a piece off the board (for example a positive self-talk if they hear their child speaking negatively about giving up) or point to the choice/step on the sheet and bring it to the student/client to redirect them so they are able to complete the task. Once completed, the student can bring the piece back to the velcro board. If the student is confused, or is too shy, they can take a piece off the board and bring it to their teacher. Ideally, the teacher/parent would encourage them to use verbal communication in addition to the visual prompts.
This can be used as a visual checklist/organizer when there are tasks given, while promoting confidence and growth in task initiation.
