Learning about the letters of the alphabet is an important part of any preschool curriculum. One of our favorite activities in my classroom occurs every Friday when we "taste the alphabet" in our snack center. I set out a variety of food and drink items that begin with our letter of the week for the kids to taste. As they come to the center and taste the foods, they record on the sheet whether or not they like each item by circling thumbs up or thumbs down. We talk about how the foods taste (salty, sour, sweet), their texture (soft, crunchy) their colors and smells. We also talk about whether they are healthy foods or not-so-healthy foods, what kind of food it is (fruit, vegetable, meat), how the foods are grown or made, and so much more! It is a great way to get the kids to try new foods and increase their vocabulary.
