I designed this activity to support my students and give them a hands on strategy for answering open ended questions. Students will each need a bag of Skittles candy to learn this strategy. Each Skittle represents a different part of they response they write to the question. Red is the introduction sentence, yellow, orange, and green represent the details in the answer, and purple is the concluding sentence. I introduce this strategy at the very beginning of the school year and we practice it many times. As students write their response they place a Skittle on their paper to remind them they have included the information in their response. After they finish their response, they the reread what they wrote. As long as all of the pieces are there, they can eat their Skittles. This strategy is very helpful for students during state testing when teachers can not help them. ****Thumbnail images did not upload correctly. However, the downloaded version is fine.
