My 6th grade students had a good understanding of tax, tips, and discounts, but they struggled to apply them in problem solving scenarios. The foldable starts with the definition of each to review and the class discussed where we see real world application of tax,
tip, and discount.
We then did guided practice with the example questions. Example 1 in each section is finding just the tax, tip, or discount. Example 2 is the same question, but asks them to apply the tax, tip, or discount. We discussed the importance of highlighting/underlining the key words that help us identify what we are trying to find.
The last three questions were their independent practice prior to completing the coloring activity. Students who struggled with the three practice problems would work in a small group with me during the coloring activity.
This coloring activity allows students to solve questions and confidently move on without having to ask if they are doing it right. As students solve a question, they shade the questions and answer with the same color or design. My students loved this part and many of them came up with some really creative and colorful designs.
If the students answer all the questions correctly, they should have created an "E" in the answer bank with their shading/coloring (see answer key). This allowed me to quickly walk around the room to see if students were understanding the concept or if they needed to be pulled for additional help.
