Let your students be creative while they learn about the complexities of classifying the characteristics of living things and taxonomy. Includes worksheets, graphic organizers and two projects to help students understand scientific classification!
Grades: 6-10 | Key Concepts: scientific classification, taxa, taxonomy, binomial nomenclature, characteristics of organisms
Students will work through a series of activities leading to the final project, creating and classifying their own organism!
(1) graphic organizer 2) research activities and (2) projects included!
First, students will create a mnemonic and complete a taxonomic pyramid graphic organizer to become familiar with scientific classification.
Then they will practice researching the taxonomic classification of an organism, including major characteristics like cell structure, nutritional needs, and method of reproduction. Students will use this research to complete a hanging mobile to present their work.
Next, they will compare two similar organisms to get a better understanding of how the classification system works.
Finally, they will begin creating their OWN unique organism, identify it's characteristics and habitat, provide a common name, scientific name and taxonomic classification.
