“Teach Kids About Africa – Dance the Kwassa Kwassa” is an engaging, participatory world cultures lesson for about Africa for kids that invites them to experience the Congolese hip-swirling dance called the Kwassa Kwassa. Kids will meet the Democratic Republic of the Congo, learn (in an age-appropriate way) about its history as a colonial nation transitioning in the 1950s, optimistically, toward independence, then get up out of their seats, get their legs shaking and their hips moving, and DANCE!
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a step-by-step "How to dance the kwassa kwassa" lesson. The goal of this lesson is to provide the tools for you to treat your students to their very first introduction to the kwassa kwassa and to inspire you and even your youngest students to get up and try the dance together. (Your kwassa kwassa moves can't be any worse than mine!) Ideally the lesson will be the first step on your and your students' road to further kwassa kwassa exploration.
All Around This World is a global music and world cultures program that introduces kids and their grown-ups to the world using enlivening international rhythms and movement.
No materials, foreknowledge of Africa or dance ability necessary. Imagination and an open mind required.
