“Teach Kids About Colombia – Let's Dance Cumbia” is an engaging, participatory world cultures lesson about Colombia for kids that invites them to experience Cumbia music and dance. Kids will learn about the South American nation of Colombia, meet Cumbia, a thriving mix of African rhythms, Spanish melodies and the cultural and musical initiatives of Colombian people, who have taken the multifaceted artform to heart, then get out of their seats and DANCE!
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a step-by-step "How to dance cumbia" lesson. The goal of this lesson is to provide the tools for you to treat your students to their very first introduction to cumbia and to inspire you and even your youngest students to get up and dance cumbia together. (Your cumbia moves can't be any worse than mine!) Ideally the lesson will be the first step on your and your students' road to further cumbia exploration.
All Around This World is a global music and world cultures program that introduces kids and their grown-ups to the world using enlivening international rhythms and movement.
No materials, foreknowledge of Colombia or dance ability necessary. Imagination and an open mind required.
