“Teach Kids About Nigeria – Let's Sing 'Bale Ile'” is a world music lesson about Nigeria for kids that uses a simple sing-along and drum-along to introduce them to West African rhythms and culture. “Bale Ile” is a multi-rhythmic Nigerian song that honors the Yoruba tradition of a potential groom appealing to the parents of his intended bride for approval to be married. All Around This World's version is a rollicking example of “fuji,” the Yoruban genre that's an offshoot improvisational music performed by Muslim youth to rouse other Muslims in the mornings before fasting begins on the days of Ramadan. When we sing it we bring out the drums – or drum on a desk, the floor or our knees – and explore the concept of African polyrhythms. The original song is in Yoruba, though we also sing in English.
All Around This World is a global music and world cultures program that introduces kids and their grown-ups to the world using enlivening international rhythms and movement.
