“Teach Kids About Nigeria – Let's Talk Like a Drum” is an engaging, participatory world cultures lesson about Nigeria for kids that invites them to create their own personal rhythms using an imaginary “Talking Drum.” Kids will meet the boisterous West African nation of Nigeria, where the West African Talking Drum (“dun dun”) is particularly popular, learn about the way drummers manipulate the sound of the instrument to “speak,” then drum out their own signature sounds as they pretend to play it.

This is NOT a "how to play the talking drum" lesson. This is an experience for you to share with kids that introduces them to the concept of the West African talking drum and inspires them to "talk" with their own "inner drums."

All Around This World is a global music and world cultures program that introduces kids and their grown-ups to the world using enlivening international rhythms and movement.

No materials, foreknowledge of Nigeria or drumming ability necessary. Imagination and an open mind required.

Lesson includes:
-- Interactive PDF with background information introducing Nigeria and links to teacher training video and All Around This World's “Teach Kids About the Talking Drum” YouTube video.

-- Access to password-protected “How to Teach Kids About the Talking Drum” video. All Around This World founder and lead teacher Jay Sand introduces you to Nigeria and suggests ways to share the lesson with kids, from infants-in-arms to 9 year-olds. In case you feel less than confident about singing and dancing with your students, the video includes a section with Jay teaching the lesson directly to kids. ** Teacher training video is on Vimeo.com. Please make sure you can access Vimeo videos before you buy the lesson.

-- Sections include: Vocabulary/Terms, Discussion/Projects, Learning Outcome/Goal, Materials, Assessment

-- Printable summary of lesson for kids to take home (both color and back and white)

-- Common core and standards information (“National Council for Social Studies” “National Standards for Music Education”)
