All Around This World

“Teach Kids About South Africa – Learn Gumboot Dancing” is an engaging, participatory world cultures lesson about South Africa for kids that introduces them to gumboot dancing, a powerful art form that African miners used as a form of communication. Kids will learn about South Africa's difficult past and the harsh lives of African miners (in age-appropriate ways), then get up and experience this inspiring (and fun!) dance for themselves.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a step-by-step "How to do gumboot dancing" lesson. The goal of this lesson is to provide the tools for you to treat your students to their very first introduction to the idea of gumboot dancing and to inspire you and even your youngest students to get up and try dancing together. (Your gumboot moves can't be any worse than mine!) Ideally the lesson will be the first step on your and your students' road to further gumboot exploration.

All Around This World is a global music and world cultures program that introduces kids and their grown-ups to the world using enlivening international rhythms and movement.

No materials, foreknowledge of Africa or dance ability necessary. Imagination and an open mind required.

Lesson includes:
-- Interactive PDF with background information introducing South Africa and links to teacher training video and All Around This World's “Teach Kids About Gumboot Dancing” YouTube video.
