Arguments are everywhere. And now, in the era of 24-hour news, social media, internet comments, and quick communication, bad arguments are everywhere. It's increasingly important that we teach our students critical thinking skills, and how to distinguish credible, logical, well-reasoned arguments from weak, manipulative, even dangerous ones. That's where the teaching of logical fallacies comes into play.

In this 3-day lesson, you'll find the following:

  • 17-slide presentation including a definition and example of logical fallacies and 15 common fallacies
  • 17-page document with student handouts of each fallacy
  • 2-page "Guided Notes" worksheet for students to complete during the presentation
  • 5-page "Logical Fallacies in The Office" matching worksheet with 20 quotes from the show (2-page worksheet; 2-page answer key, plus an additional page with extension activities)
  • 4-page matching and multiple choice quiz (2-page quiz; 2-page answer key)

UPDATE: All files included in this lesson now come as PDFs and editable PowerPoints.

*Students should be able to complete all of the work in this lesson regardless of whether they've actually seen The Office (though the matching worksheet will be more fun for those who have).
