Phonemic Awareness and Phonic knowledge are the building blocks of reading and writing English.
Children typically develop phonic knowledge in a sequenced manner, with additional knowledge gained from environmental print, knowledge of their own names and those of family and friends etc.
Once a child knows the names, shapes and sounds of some alphabet letters (including the short vowels), you are ready to build simple words. CVC words are ideal as there are so many that are nouns (can be illustrated easily) and are phonetically simple.
Teach Phonics 1 provides Phonic Cards presented in 3 formats, with activity instructions, ideas for multi-levelling and blank cards for you to develop your own additional materials.
You can show children how individual letters can blend together to make a word. For example, c-a-t makes cat and d-o-g makes dog.
Use these Sound Box cards and Phonic Fold Up cards to make (blend) and break (decode) simple consonant-vowel-consonant (cvc) words.

A favourite Learning Centre partner game with these right now is 'Mr Mistake'.
- Student A makes the word using plastic letters, but makes ONE error.
- Their partner (Student B) has to find the error and explain their thinking.
- e.g. Partner A made 'cap for the picture showing 'cat'. Student B corrects identifying that 'p' makes the /p/ sound but cat ends in a /t/ sound and needs the letter t.
- They use the cards with flaps folded under so that they can self correct.
