I created this unit to teach my students about character traits, compare-contrast essays, and grammar. I centered it around the theme failure as most of the students go through a difficulty at this age.

Within three weeks of instruction, students learn:
• Reflect on their experiences;
• Watch videos and make conclusions;
• Infer character traits and cite evidence to support their answer;
• Read for information;
• Use different comprehension strategies to understand a difficult text
• Research about another athletes who are born with a disability but surpass all odds;
• Learn 24 new words;
• Play engaging vocabulary games;
• Learn the difference between common and proper noun;
• Develop their listening, speaking, and collaborative skills through group work;
• Create media pieces to express a message;
• Write a paragraph using examples and repetition;
• Learn the organization of compare-contrast essays;
• Write a compare-contrast essay;
• Complete a vocabulary and grammar test;
• Use a Venn diagram and other graphic organizers to learn how to effectively organize information


This NO PREP unit includes step by step instruction on how to teach it. All the resources are linked. Answers to questions are provided.
