Product Description
Even though "close reading" is now the trendiest term out there, many teachers still ask themselves: "How do I introduce close reading? What is the difference between the first, second, and third read?? What questions should I ask?" This packets answers all these questions and more. It will help you ease into close reading while exposing your students to unique stories they will fall in love with: Polish legends.

The unit consists of two parts:
1. Part one: E-book with nine Polish legends (64 pages)
a. Each legend is followed by carefully crafted questions that resemble the questions your student will have to answer on the STANDARDIZED reading test
b. Each legend includes a worksheet with a story map.
c. Each legend includes a coloring page, beautifully illustrated by a Polish artist (my friend, Ewa Patalas).
2. Part two: DETAILED lesson plans that will guide you and your students through the close reading process (24 pages)
a. The lesson plans explain what kind of questions and literature responses should be generated by the first, second, and third read.
b. The lesson plans explain how to teach the following concepts: theme, mood, author’s tone, story elements (rising action, climax etc.), inferencing, annotations, and connections.
How will these legends foster a love for reading in your kiddos? Well, for one – these stories will take them on an exciting reading journey to a place they have never been before…medieval Poland. It is a magical land roamed by brave lads, dangerous dragons, and evil demons; where good and bad, joy and tears, black magic and reality all mix together.

How will this unit prepare your kiddos for the testing? Each legend is followed by carefully crafted comprehension questions commonly asked on the standardized tests. Moreover, the questions as well as the lesson plans included in the unit address ALL COMMON CORE STANDARDS FOR LITERATURE.

**Note: Some of the legends are slightly on the “dark side” (in the same fashion the King Arthur legends are). Poland is a country with a colorful but turbulent past, which is reflected in its often sad, tragic stories. They all, however, convey deep life lessons that your students will appreciate.
