During a one-week time frame, students will read the short story "The Teacher Who Changed My Life," watch the film Freedom Writers (2007), and then complete an in-class timed essay comparing and contrasting the two. While reading and viewing the film, students will take notes on Miss Hurd (story) and Ms. Gruwell (film) and their teaching styles/character traits. Anything they take notes on can be applied to their in-class writing. The goal of these activities is to focus in on elements of characterization and allow students to use various texts to locate similarities/differences.
