Product Description
The Teacher's Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook is a printable PDF handwriting workbook that teaches children how to write each letter of the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase form. It also teaches children to read and write CVC words using all five vowels. The workbook features my original handwritten font "Get Real" and uses clear, simple instructions for handwriting. The workbook presents each of 26 Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets in a delightful scene (illustrated by my husband) that brings its story to life. The puppets give clear, simple handwriting instructions in a speech bubble.

I designed a handwriting workbook for my literacy program (The Monaco Method for Early Literacy) because I was unhappy with the traditional manuscript font found in most language arts workbooks. I feel it is a misrepresentation of how handwritten letters are formed and appear when written. For example, the appearance of a traditional manuscript lowercase “a” leads children to believe that they are supposed to draw a circle then lift their pencil to draw a vertical line- from the middle line to the bottom line- on the right side of the circle. In fact, a lowercase “a” should be formed just the way Antoinette the Alligator describes in The Monaco Method: She says, “Start in the middle. Around like a C, up and down.” I have found that other programs use confusing metaphors and complex instructions to explain handwriting. I feel strongly about using clear, simple instructions when I teach my students to write. For that reason, The Monaco Method handwriting component focuses on two things: where the letter starts and how many ‘pick ups’ it has (how many times you lift your pencil during formation).

I created my own handwritten font, which I named “Get Real”, because I want my students to have an authentic example of handwriting. When children see letters written in the “Get Real” font, they see them exactly as they appear when written by a human hand. Is my font perfect? No! And I struggled with that temporarily because I am a perfectionist. But then I had a realization; nothing handwritten by a human will ever be perfect. So, instead of trying to achieve perfection, I want my students to form letters correctly and carefully, making their writing as lovely as they can.

With this workbook, students use printed worksheets to practice writing, using my real, handwritten font as an example. They build confidence through tracing, then write independently. When students learn about a letter, they need to know what it’s called, how it sounds, and how to write it in uppercase and lowercase form.

I also have a Language Arts Workbook that incorporates the handwriting elements found in this book and also lessons for teaching phonics, reading, and spelling. See “Teacher’s Creatures Beginning Language Arts Workbook”.

The Teacher's Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook is a handwriting program based on Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets. I recommend purchasing my "Teacher's Creatures Phonics Puppets A-Z (Teacher Set with Stories and Motions)" along with this workbook so your students will be able to make a meaningful connection between the puppets, their letter sounds, and handwriting.

The Teacher's Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook is a component of The Monaco Method for Early Literacy (See "The Monaco Method for Early Literacy- K/1 Reading, Writing & Spelling Program"). Visit www.monacolane.com for more information.
