Teacher’s Creatures Beginning Language Arts Workbook is a component of The Monaco Method for Early Literacy and a companion to Teacher’s Creatures Phonics Puppets. The workbook teaches phonics, handwriting, reading, and spelling with full color illustrations, my own handwritten font, and engaging activities that sharpen literacy skills.
Each lesson includes guided handwriting instruction, independent practice, a writing review, and a sound search. After every three lessons there is a review that tests students’ phonemic awareness and letter recognition. After every six lessons there is a spelling and reading review that incorporates CVC words.
My workbook includes a handwriting element because I was unhappy with the traditional manuscript font found in most language arts workbooks. I feel it is a misrepresentation of how handwritten letters are formed and appear when written. I created my own handwritten font, which I named “Get Real”, because I want my students to have an authentic example of handwriting. My method for teaching handwriting gives simple instructions that focus on where letters start and how many pickups they have (how many times you lift your pencil during formation). The handwriting lessons in this workbook reinforce the instructions children learn from Teacher’s Creatures Phonics Puppets.
The first eight lessons in this book introduce high frequency letters that are distinct from one another and teach many of the strokes necessary for writing the alphabet. These letters also allow for the spelling of many CVC words. The letter C is introduced early because there are ten letters start ‘around like a C’.
When students learn about a letter, they should know what it’s called, how it sounds, and how to write it in uppercase and lowercase form. When handwriting is paired with phonics, students will have a complete understanding of the alphabet and a solid foundation for learning to read.
NOTE: This workbook contains the same instructional pages for teaching handwriting as my product “Teacher’s Creatures Beginning Handwriting Workbook”, but also includes lessons for phonics, spelling, and reading. If you are interested in handwriting instruction alone, please refer to my handwriting workbook.
