Teachers involving parents in school (TIPS) is a great way to engage the whole family with the learning process and it helps to foster positive two-way communication between the teacher and parents.
I like to use my TIPS assignments with Google Classroom but they could be printed out and distributed to students to take home. These assignments are a great way for students to show their parents what they know and it keeps the parents in the loop about classroom topics. I like to create TIPS for topics with common misconceptions to stimulate lively conversations.
This TIPS is designed to probe for some common misconceptions about temperature and heat transfer. These misconceptions may be held for both parents and students. In addition to having conversations with each other, students and parents will view brief video clips and offer their explanations about the science involved.
There are sections for students and parents to complete on their own and other places that require students and parents to have a conversation about the topic.
