This product builds number sense while teaching subtraction basic facts using only 4 different mental strategies. The 173-page PDF contains a 16-page Teacher's Manual including instructions on how to print each of the three sets of 100 subtraction basic flash cards. Each of the three sets is designed for a different learning style. The first set uses illustrations of Rekenreks to show how to change a "difficult" basic subtraction fact into an easier addition fact. For instance, 13 – 6 can be thought of as 4 + 3 by determining the distance from 6 to 10 and adding that to the distance from 13 to 10.
A narrative story with a visual is included in the materials to teach this concept via a story line. The Rekenrek, which can be commercially purchased or made following directions in this product appeals to students who learn best by manipulating a tangible product. The cards show the set up and the action for each of the 4 mental strategies.
The second set of cards is designed for students who learn from spatial relationships. Each card shows a rectangle representing the whole with another rectangle below showing one part. The whole and one part are labeled with a number and the student must use the size of the other part or the strategies taught to find the size of the other number.
The third set of cards is designed for students who learn best in language with rules.
There are 15 student worksheets and 10 self-study pages along with several miscellaneous pages to make it easier for you to use with your students.
