Try as I might, my students didn't get allusions. This lesson plan took me five years to perfect, but this is now a highly scaffolded, in-depth, and best of all, successful lesson in my classroom! This contains a six page, 13-step handout for the students. In it the students identify allusions, discuss the background knowledge the writer assumes, create their own allusions, identify allusions in poetry, and then write about allusions. There are 10 additional poems with allusions for individual practice. In addition, pages 17-22 are my notes on teaching the lesson as well as an explanation of the allusions in the 10 poems.
This lesson focuses on poetry, but could be used for a novel as well. I designed it for a 10th grade classroom, but it could work for any high school level. It will take between 2-4 days to do this lesson.
The download is a PDF, but if you purchase it and want it as a word document, I would be happy to email it to you. When I tried to upload this as a word document it messed with the margins, etc.
