Right around the time I was doing report cards for my students, it dawned on me what a great format that would be for them to evaluate the characters in their books. Using a general report card layout, the kids select two traits for their character and evaluate their character's performance on that trait. Additionally, they have to provide evidence from the text to support their rating and explain what that quote says about the character. You may want to provide the traits ahead of time, depending on the capabilities of your students. One example has been done for them. I used this in my literature circles, and it was really neat to see how the kids rated the same character - for the most part, they had the same rating! Plus, the kids thought it was cool to fill out a report card for someone other than themselves! :) Enjoy!
