PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity gives students an opportunity to kinesthetically manipulate syllables. Specifically, it's a demonstration of a consonant closing in a vowel, changing a syllable from open to closed.

Give each student (or pair) a Shut the Front Door sheet and the Shut the Front Door words. (The words are in a separate file, because they are formatted for and must be printed 2 sided). Students should first cut out the square word list. Then, cut each word along the lines. Now, one at a time, lay each word on the house reading each with the door open and then folded over with the door closed. The door side of the word has one or two consonants on it. These close in the vowel changing it from an open syllable word with a long vowel to a closed syllable word with a short vowel.
