Are you a First Grade teacher looking for creative ways to teach the common core? Or a music teacher looking for ways to integrate common core into your music classroom? This product offers nine different lessons that can be taught by both First grade teachers and music teachers. The lessons revolve around movement and folk music common for music teachers to teach their first graders, instead of traditional songs with changed lyrics. The lessons include:
*Teaching Singular and Plural Nouns through Movement (Language):
Includes lesson with movement directions, as well as cute visuals to aid students with movement and understanding of singular and plural nouns
*Rickity Rackity (Reading/ Foundational)
: Includes lesson for helping students to decode words into syllables, as well as a mp3 with the chant
*Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Reading, Literature)
: Includes lesson for retelling the story of Goldilocks, as well as story cards for students to arrange the order of events in the story (Note: This lesson requires either a book of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" or a verbal retelling of the story)
*Sunshine on my Shoulders (Reading/ Literature)
: This lesson has students discuss words and phrases that suggest feelings/ uses of senses within the book by Christopher Canyon and the song by John Denver (Note: This lesson requires the book/recording of "Sunshine on my Shoulders")
*Listening Lesson (Speaking and Listening)
: Using any piece of music you'd like, students can write about what they hear and see when they listen to the music. This includes a writing worksheet.
*Small group discussion:
Using pieces from "The Carnival of the Animals," this lesson invites students to participate in collaborative discussions about which animal they think each piece is about, and which piece they like the best. This could be adapted to use other music as well.
*Shapes Movement (Geometry)
: This fun movement activity invites students to create different shapes with their class. Simple percussion instruments are used (wood block, hand drum, and triangle.)
*Cobbler Cobbler (Measurement and Data)
: This lesson invites students to identify times within the song, put those times on a clock with movable hands, and fill out worksheets identifying times to the hour and the half hour. Includes mp3 of the song.
*We are dancing (Operations and Algebraic Thinking)
: This fun singing game allows for a real-world application of addition and subtraction! Includes lesson and mp3 of song.
For those teachers comfortable with singing, the lessons include notated music; for those not musically inclined, the lessons include mp3’s. Each lesson includes the specific common core standards covered, the musical objectives met, materials, and process.
