Teaching vocabulary no longer needs to be dull and disconnected. By providing our students with opportunities to make connections to words, we will enable them to broaden their vocabulary in a more effective manner.
Within this resource, you’ll find 6 different lesson plans for strategies, with needed worksheets or graphic organizers, that can be used to teach vocabulary in your classroom. Not only will students learn to determine the definitions, but they will learn to analyze the nuance of meaning, the morphemes, or parts, of the word to determine the meaning in context, and to find and engage in their own learning by identifying important words within their own reading to share with their peers. These strategies are:
Vocabulary Sorting with Tree Maps
Word Collecting for the Word of the Day/Week
As you engage in these strategies, make sure students have multiple exposures to the words with ample review and practice. After you have taught students how to use a strategy and they have practiced them with you a number of times, I hope they will be able to continue to use them independently as they read new texts.
