This smartboard file contains two lessons on using context clues to determine a word meaning. Both lessons begin with a short paragraph which models the strategy of context clues. Then the students read plays from Helen Lester (“Me First” and “Hooway for Wodney Wat”) to practice the strategy of context clues. Both plays have assigned words for students to apply the context clues strategy as well as a check of definitions using the Smartboard vortex activity. I have used this file as whole class lessons, stations/centers, as well as intervention activities.
The smartboard file and materials have the students working as “Word Detectives.” To add a little more fun for students, create Top Secret Files with the included folder cover. Create a detective agency name and add it to the cover sheets as well as the smartboard slides.
