This bundle includes a two pages of questions on the story and a key. You can find the text of the story here: http://sharlastatham.weebly.com/uploads/1/6/5/9/16591428/saturday_climbing_by_wd_valgardson.pdf
After reading the story and answering the questions, ask students to suggest another activity besides rock climbing that could have provided an equally useful symbolic setting for the story. Have them present a point-form outline of how the story might have unfolded, using this different activity. Or, have students think of one of their favourite sports or hobbies and describe the ways in which it could be considered a “metaphor for life”. Students could discuss their ideas in small groups.
