During my Parent Information Night, I use a game with my parents to show them what it is like for first graders to learn how to read. When giving kids books to read, if it is too hard for them, the words are often foreign or mean nothing. I give my parents a Mad Gab saying on a card and ask them what the card means. They often can't tell me and say they are a bunch of words. I tell them that this is what our kids see if they are not reading the right level books. The words mean nothing. I then tell the parents to use strategies to figure out what their words mean. They say them slowly, repeat them etc. I then tell them that this is what we teach our kids to do...ask what makes sense, say the words slowly, repeat them, etc. This game shows parents what students see when they don't know what words are written on the page.
