Product Description
Teach students how to analyze current events with this resource. This is ideal for general education secondary classrooms that focus on ELA, government and politics. I have used this resource in the past and my students loved it! Here are some suggestions that you can use to teach this resource in your classroom:

Before Reading

*Build background knowledge by teaching the historical significance of the DNC.
*Use a word web, a context clues activity, or a Frayer model to review challenging words. Check out the following resource:
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocabulary-Activities-Connotative-and-Denotative-1626040
*Pair struggling readers with stronger readers in groups before you begin reading.

During Reading

*Teachers can use this activity to teach rhetorical devices and speech analysis.
*Teachers are encouraged to:
Allow the students to watch this speech. This will benefit the auditory and visual learners. Here is a link to the website that has the speech:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94003143
www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRPCkyqJT14
*Allow students to read in groups and assign group roles.
*Allow students to read silently and annotate (take notes) on the passage.
*Complete a round robin reading of the text as a whole group.

After Reading
*Complete the “Identifying Rhetorical Devices” Chart independently or as a group.
*Complete the “Analyzing the Speech” Graphic Organizer independently or as a group..
*Jigsaw the graphic organizers and assign different groups for different worksheets.
*Enlarge the graphic organizers. Then, have the students complete the graphic organizers on chart paper and use it as a processing chart.
