Included in this set are 26 posters with supporting pictures and actions along with brief alliteration phrases to go along with my “How We Really Say It” products. Using these together, your students will learn the alphabet letter names and sounds visually through pictures, with auditory support through the phrases, and kinesthetically through actions supported by the pictures. This type of learning is crucial for reading through decoding and for writing through sounding out strategies.
My “How We Really Say It” products were developed out of my frustration with publishers who publish picture support materials that just confused my young students. Research shows young children benefit from learning the short vowel sounds before the long vowel sounds so they can rapidly begin decoding and encoding VCV words like dog, cat, kid, and fit. Some of the published material I found included a picture of egg for the short e sound, and orange for the short o sound. Let’s get real! In my part of the country, when we say egg, it has a long a sound and r-controlled materials. Really?
Using these phonetically correct materials your young learners will soon have mastered letter names and sounds with little or no confusion and be on the road to reading and writing. If you really emphasize the actions, after a few weeks you’ll see your learner making the action when he/she comes to a word s/he is trying to sound out or spell. Great scaffolding support!
