Close reading strategies applied to a short film. Teaching with short films is a great way to engage struggling readers and English language learners, giving them a scaffold that enables them to actively participate in discussions with peers about literary terms. Each film/ lesson comes with: plot maps, essential questions, writing, and discussion prompts.
This set of standards based lessons includes an examination of dynamic characters, conflict, plot, tone/mood, suspense, and motif/theme using the film "One Man Band" as a mentor text. These four (ish) minute films and lessons work well as a hook that gives students something to connect to during a more in-depth lesson on a literary device within a complex text. The videos are not included.
