Close reading strategies applied to a short film. Teaching with short films is a great way to engage struggling readers and English language learners, giving them a scaffold that enables them to actively participate in discussions with peers about literary terms. Each film/ lesson comes with: plot maps, essential questions, writing and discussion prompts and suggestions for extending the lesson. They can be used with a single question as a quick warm-up activity, or as an in-depth study of literary devices using the "extend the lesson" page and the writing prompts. This lesson using "Paperman" focuses on archetypes, stereotypes, anthropomorphism and allusion ("The Red Balloon"). These four (ish) minute films and lessons work well as a hook that gives students something to connect to during a more in-depth lesson on a literary device within a complex text. The videos are not included.
