One of the most difficult but useful skills to teach young students is how to determine the main idea. This resource uses semantic, syntactic, and visual clues to help young children develop how to use these clues to make sense of text. This will help them later as they read a passage without pictures. Another buyer recommended that this unit is great for the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) Here is some recent feedback from a buyer with a GREAT idea on how to use this product!
"Fabulous Resource! I projected them and then had kids do an active response by putting up 1, 2 or 3 fingers. We did this for about 2 weeks and kids were engaged and really understood it! Perfect for 1st grade!"

I use pictures at first with three sentence choices to show the student which one describes the action in the picture (or beginning main idea) . This method has been very successful with my students who have receptive and expressive language disorders. This activity also assists my students with improving comprehension skills; another skill that is very important to develop in the young child.
You will receive 28 useable pages with real pictures, answer key, and a main idea poster. If you like this activity, please look at my other critical thinking activities!
