I used this to teach main idea and supporting details to a 4th grade class.
I brought in a strainer and asked the students if they know what it is used for. They might see their parents make pasta or macaroni and cheese with it. The water helps the pasta cook in the pot and then when it is finished you dump it in the strainer. All of the water goes out and the pasta is left in the strainer because it is the most important – it is like the main idea! The water is like the supporting details – it is important to cook the pasta but the pasta is the most important!
Slide 5: If you project this power point on a white board you could write the sentences where they belong. Or if you have a smart board you could take the power point out of presentation mode and drag the sentences to where they belong.
As the students read and do other activities refer back to the strainer when talking about main idea!
