Understanding multiplication is the path to developing multiplicative reasoning. That's why teaching the concept of multiplication receives a huge emphasis in grades 3 - 5. Students need to understand how multiplication works beyond just memorizing facts or procedures.


This three-lesson PowerPoint introduces and teaches the concept of multiplication using equal groups, arrays, and number lines. Engage students with 3 self-contained interactive lessons that include opportunities for students to interact using the included multiplication printables.

The PowerPoint is divided into 3 sections:

  • Lesson 1: Equal Groups
    • This lesson covers the concept of multiplication as equal groups.
    • Students will see that to multiply, groups of objects must be equal. The slides give explicit examples of multiplying equal groups.
    • Students have an opportunity to practice with manipulatives (tiles, counters, or whichever manipulative you can provide) on selected slides that coordinate with the printables.

  • Lesson 2: Arrays
    • This lesson teaches building multiplication models using arrays.
    • The slides show students the connection between equal groups and arrays. The slides give explicit examples of how to use arrays to multiply.
    • Students have an opportunity to practice with manipulatives (tiles, counters, or whichever manipulative you can provide) on selected slides that coordinate with the printables.

  • Lesson 3: Number Lines
    • This lesson teaches how to use a number line to multiply.
    • Using a number line to can be prone to errors, but through the animation on the slide, students are shown explicit examples of how to jump on a number line to multiply.
    • Students will practice on selected slides that coordinate with the printables


  • Each lesson has explicit examples through animation. Each lesson includes the following components:
    • concept building with explicit examples with animation
    • partner talk to process and share what was learned
    • A hands-on activity to go from concrete understanding to connecting to multiplication symbols and numbers.
    • Sentence frames to help frame understanding and support English Language Learners
    • Each slide also has sounds that enhance the animation and keeps students engaged though it can be turned off by turning down the volume.

  • Each slide has presenter notes for the teacher. The Presenter's Notes give
    • a summary of the slide
    • instructions on how to advance the animations
    • questions to stimulate mathematical thinking
