Teaching Nonfiction Reading (A Comprehensive Unit On Skills and Strategies)

As teachers, you know just how hard it is to fit everything in to your school day! Students are required to learn so much within a school day, that often science and social studies curriculum gets put on the back burner. This “Science-Reading Partnership” nonfiction reading unit is a perfect solution for integrating science curriculum into reading! Teach your students how to read non-fiction texts by introducing skills and strategies that help with understanding non-fiction texts. This unit is designed to be taught during your regular reading block, but the texts that the students will be reading have a focus on ecosystems (habitats, animal adaptations, food chains, protecting wild-life, and more) - a common 3-5 grade level science focus.

The following nonfiction skills are taught through the lens of this ecosystem content:
1. Determining the difference between fiction and non-fiction
2. Learning how to use and read non-fiction text features (graphs, maps, labels, photos...etc)
3. How to determine the structure a non-fiction text (descriptive, sequencing, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast)
4. Learning and using vocabulary words that are specific to the content
5. Author’s Purpose
6. Main Idea/ Supporting Details
7. Gathering information about the same topic from several texts
8. Comparing and Contrasting information found within a text
9. Reading primary and secondary sources
10. Determining facts and opinions in non-fiction texts

Students will complete the unit by creating their own non-fiction reading guide to showcase all of the strategies and skills that they have learned throughout the unit.

There are a total of 12 lessons plans (some taking more than one day to complete). The lessons introduce students to a variety of non-fiction texts such as articles, interviews, books, letters to a magazine, and more. The format of the unit uses small group, individual, and whole group practice

In your purchase you will receive the following:
1. Detailed lesson plans
2. 63 anchor slides to go along with each lesson and activity. Anchor slides are provided in SMARTBoard, PowerPoint, PDF, and PNG image file formats.
3. A student activity packet that students will use throughout the unit (30 pages!) The packet is common core based and has students completing activities, and journal questions that fulfill common core standards
4. Six originally written nonfiction texts to be used in the lessons
5. Two Student reference sheets for teaching text features and structures
6. An “End of Unit” Non-fiction reading guide template for students to complete to show their learning throughout the unit
7. An 88-piece interactive bulletin board set to help reinforce concepts learned (in full color!)
9. Task cards and group discussion question cards to be used for small group projects.

In addition to all materials listed above, I have provided a list all of the book titles that you will need to teach the lessons. These are popular books that you will be able to find in your local libraries or many already in your classroom!

Please be sure to look at the detailed sample to check out everything that you will be getting! Over 230 pages, slides, and bulletin board pieces!
